چکیده

This article focuses on the main issues that affect the lifetime and performance of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. The short lifespans of these fuel cells represent a barrier to their massive commercialization and usage in mobile and stationary applications. As fuel cell is a very complex system, a lot of knowledge of different areas is required, such as chemistry, electricity and mechanics, in order to completely understand its operation and all the problems that can occur during it. It is for this reason that an interdisciplinary approach needs to be taken when designing fuel-cell energy systems. This paper focuses on identifying and solving those issues that negatively affect the lifetime and performance of fuel cells. It is hoped that this article would be a valuable aid for power electronics’ researchers and engineers for better understanding the presented issues and a useful guide for solving them with the use of proper power electronic-devices. Initially, the basic operation and structure of a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell is explained. Three main issues that can occur during operation of a mobile or stationary fuel cell energy system are pointed out and discussed in details, on the basis of the state-of-the-art on fuel cell technology. These issues are poor water management, reactant gas starvation and fuel cell current ripple. This article provides answers as to why they occur, how they affect the fuel cell, how they can be mitigated, and what are the future trends within this research field.

Recent Progress on the Key Materials and Components for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells in Vehicle Applications

Fuel cells are the most clean and efficient power source for vehicles. In particular, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are the most promising candidate for automobile applications due to their rapid start-up and low-temperature operation. Through extensive global research efforts in the latest decade, the performance of PEMFCs, including energy efficiency, volumetric and mass power ...

Optimal Operation of Doubly-fed Induction Generator used in a Grid-Connected Wind Power System

In this paper, a wind power system based on a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is modeled and simulated. To guarantee high-performance control of the powers injected into the grid by the wind turbine, five intelligent super-twisting sliding mode controllers (STSMC) are used to eliminate the active power and current ripples of the DFIG. The STSMC controller is a high-order sliding mode cont...

The Optimal Power Flow of Multiple Energy Carriers in Networked Multi-Carrier Microgrid

The future distribution network comprising different energy carriers will include small-scale energy resources (SSERs) and loads, known as a Networked multi-carrier microgrid (NMCMG). This concept not only leads to an efficient reduction in operation costs, but also encompasses the energy transformation between gas and electric networks at combined nodes, as well as district heating networks. Suggested New Voltage and Frequency Control Framework for Autonomous Operation of Microgrids

Decentralized control strategies are popular candidates in microgrids control because of their reliability and performance. Conventionally, droop control (as a main decentralized strategy) is been utilized in order to prevent permanent droop of voltage and frequency after change in loads and also to share generated power between distributed generation units. In this paper, a new droop control s...
